Implant Dentistry is a relatively new area of dentistry, and is not officially recognized as a specialty. However, performing it well requires extensive training beyond dental school. Since this training isn't required, dentists can be tempted to shortcut the process.

Dr. Thein, however, has assiduously pursued post-graduate training as an implant dentist, and has achieved distinction with some recognized credentials.

After receiving his dental degree from Boston University School of Dentistry, he went on to obtain advanced dental implant training from the Misch Implant Institute. This institute is coordinated by Dr. Carl Misch, widely recognized as one of the most expert implant dentists in the country. He is the author of the most popular textbook on the subject.

To enhance his restorative expertise, he received training in full mouth reconstruction and occlusion from the Dawson Center for Advanced Dental Education in Florida. Dr. Peter Dawson, who runs that center, is recognized by many as the best authority in complex restorative dentistry and occlusion, and has authored several textbooks on those subjects.

Best Implant Dentist Credentials

As we said, there is no way to document that any dentist is the best in any field. However, there are credentials that dentists can obtain to demonstrate their expertise. Dr. Thein has achieved the highest level of credentialing in two separate organizations.

First, he is a diplomate of the American Board of Oral Implantology. Very few dentists who place or restore implants have this certification, because it involves a lengthy and demanding process. It requires extensive postgraduate training, a written examination, and the presentation and defense of numerous clinical cases before the Board.

But beyond this, Dr. Thein is also a diplomate of the International College of Oral Implantologists. This organization offers three credentials: ICOI Fellowship, IPS Mastership and ICOI Diplomate. Diplomate status is the highest of the three, and to obtain that level a dentist must first obtain Fellowship or Mastership and then go on to demonstrate further advanced training as well as presenting clinical cases and submitting to an oral examination about those cases. Again, few dentists obtain any of these credentials, so achieving the highest level is a remarkable distinction.

Both of these organizations also have maintenance requirements to be able to continue to claim diplomate status.
